The definition of biotechnology as used by the US Census Bureau and the National Science Foundation is: the application of molecular and cellular processes to solve problems, conduct research, and create goods and services. Most people think that a career in biotechnology is all about being a scientist, wearing white coloured coats, and working in laboratories, its a wrong notion, because biotechnology offers a wide variety of career opportunities ranging from sales and marketing to R&D, manufacturing and quality control.


The global biotech industry employs about 300,000 people all over the world. It enjoys over $122 billion funding from government sources. There are around 7000 companies involved in the sector, 93% of which are privately owned. Biotechnology is one of the most?research-intensive?industries in the world. The U.S. biotech industry spent $17.9 billion on research and development in 2003.

Indian Prospective?


The Indian biotechnology sector is one of the fastest growing knowledge-based sectors in India. It holds a 2% share in the global market. The Indian biotech industry?s turnover in 2008-2009 was US$ 2.51 billion. According to a report by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and consultancy firm KPMG, the Indian biotechnology sector is likely to become a US$ 5 billion industry by 2010. The report stated, “India is ranked among the top 12 biotech destinations in the world and is the third biggest in Asia-Pacific in terms of the number of biotech companies.”


Some of the top biotech companies present in the country include Biocon, Serum Institute of India, Panacea Biotec, Nicholas Piramal, Wockhardt Limited.
